My Experience as a Historical Intern of Newton County
Hello, I am Carlus, the oldest of the I.N.D.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.T 3, I was blessed with this job as a Historical Intern of Newton County apart President Obama stimulus package under the Workforce Investment Act. I entered this job with very little knowledge about my family history and the historical town of Covington where I was raised. First I was not sure of my job description and how I was going to make it through the entire 5 weeks that this job last. Over the weeks of interviewing historians, working out of the Newton County Judicial Center, going to many historical site has made me truly realize that this was worth the time and effort that we have put into this program. Although we started this program with 6 people, 3 boys Marquevious, Antwan and Roshadrec and ended with 3 independent girls, Carlus, Micah and Jasmine, we have all grown closer together as historical interns. This experience has been a true blessing in disguise because I have learned how to use cameras, interview historians, edit videos, update our afro-newton website, find ancestors on ancestry.com and other library databases, work with deeds and inferior court records in the judicial center, communicate well with others and work together as a team. I have gained not only a sense of leadership but a friendship as well with Micah and Jasmine because I was the oldest I looked out for them and protected them to the best of my abilities and I as a result am very grateful to have worked with such intelligent young women as themselves. I will truly miss them the most because without them I wouldn't have had the knowledge, fun, laughter and worthwhile experience that I gained from this program. I thank everyone for their management, contributions and support for this program. I pray that in the future this program will become a job that will increase the interest among the youth of all ages to help keep history apart of our lives. Despite some pretty rough times we managed to make this program a success and I appreciate every ounce of knowledge I gained from this experience as a historical intern and I look forward to helping other keep history alive.
I thank everyone so much for their support
